Common Tree Care for Late Summer

Getting Ready for the Months Ahead

Although it isn’t over yet, we are definitely past the peak of summer. Before you know it, autumn will be here, and with that can come some challenges for your trees. How then can you look after them right now? As leading Brentwood tree surgeons, we know our stuff when it comes to late summer tree care. Here are some of the jobs that you need to tick off while the warmer weather is still here.

Pruning

Pruning is a great thing to do in late summer. If you remove dead or diseased branches now, you can reduce the risk of those branches breaking and falling when the weather gets a little more unsettled. It’s also a good way of stopping pests and diseases in their tracks. Knowing if or when a tree needs to be pruned can be tough. That’s where we come in! We’ll take a close look at your tree and decide which branches need to be removed to best preserve its health.

In some cases, it may be the better option to remove a tree completely. This can be because it has grown too weak and unstable to be able to stand up to any autumn storms. Doing this now will prevent that tree from falling and causing injury and damage to your property.

Watering

The hottest days of summer might be behind us now, but that doesn’t mean that you should neglect your duties when it comes to watering. You can still get dry spells in later summer and early autumn after all. So focus now on watering the roots of your tree deeply around once a week. You should give them a really thorough watering rather than a light sprinkle every day. This will give them all the nourishment they need for the months ahead.

Mulching

Mulching is another late summer tree care job that you can’t afford to skip. The weather can be unpredictable at this time of year, and mulch will shield your tree’s roots from that. It also keeps the soil moist and keeps weeds at bay. We recommend using organic mulch and applying it in a layer a few inches thick. Don’t let it come up to the base of the tree trunk, as this can lead to rot! As the mulch breaks down, it will release so many amazing nutrients into the soil.

Planting

We know it isn’t technically caring for what is in your garden right now, but planting is something that you shouldn’t forget at this time of year if you want to add more trees to your outdoor space. Autumn is a great time to plant new trees and shrubs. This is because the cooler and wetter weather creates the perfect environment for root development. So start thinking about trees that you want to plant, and we can do that for you!
